With the new feature, you can simply move files around on your computer by dragging them to the address bar or “breadcrumbs” in Explorer. For example, if you are browsing My Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Users > Your Name > Documents, you can simply drag the files to one of the folders in the address bar.

Windows 11 Build 26241 should also fix some small bugs, but the new feature in Explorer is the main novelty of the new beta. Build 26241 has also started rolling out to members of Microsoft’s Windows Insider program.

We’ve probably all encountered the infamous 404 error message at some point during our browsing.
Microsoft’s AI obsession is destroying the company’s climate goals

Technology giant Microsoft recently released its sustainability report for the 2023 financial year, and it didn’t exactly have positive numbers. Microsoft set a climate goal in 2020 to become carbon negative by 2030, sequestering more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it emits, but the company seems to be on the wrong track to achieve this goal. Microsoft’s greenhouse gas emissions increased by 30 percent in the 2023 financial year — and it’s all Copilot’s fault.

The big culprit is the company’s huge AI investments. It takes huge amounts of energy to train and use AI models. The International Energy Agency expects energy consumption for data centers worldwide to increase from 460 TWh in 2022 to between 620 and 1,050 TWh by 2026, due to AI and cryptocurrency use. For context, Sweden’s total energy consumption in 2022 was approximately 508 TWh.

Microsoft CEO Brad Smith confirmed in an interview with Bloomberg that the previous climate goals are now much harder to reach, precisely because of AI.

“In 2020, we unveiled our ambitious carbon target. That was before the explosion in artificial intelligence. In many ways, we are now five times further away from reaching them than we were in 2020, if you just think about our own forecast for the expansion of AI and its electricity needs,” Smith said.

You can now measure your internet speed directly in the browser toolbox.

To access the toolbox in Edge, you need to click on the plus sign in the rightmost column of the browser. Then you can type “Tools” in the search bar and click on the small icon. The browser toolbox with the new internet speed test should appear.

The toolbox is a pretty useful little feature in Edge, it also includes a calculator, a unit converter, a translation function, a timer and a random number generator. Nifty little touches like this are part of the reason why it’s worth considering switching from Chrome to Edge.

Version 124.0.2478.80 was a relatively minor update to Microsoft Edge. Apart from the internet speed test, it only contains some bug fixes and new security updates.

Google has revealed some new improvements in the latest update to its cloud service Google Drive. The playback of video files in your Drive will be faster, and it will be easier to sort and find all your files in the cloud.

Thanks to new transcoding in Google Drive, the transfer capacity can be adjusted to give you higher or lower resolution depending on your connection speed. With the update, video playback should also start faster from the moment you hit the Play button, and it shouldn’t buffer as often. So far, these improvements only apply to new video files uploaded to Google Drive since the launch of the update, but Google promises that all video files in Drive will benefit from the update before the end of the year.

Google is testing a new security feature that hides your IP address in the beta version of the Chrome browser, MSPowerUser reports. The feature is simply called “IP Protection” and will basically do what the name suggests, protect your IP address.

The new feature will hide your IP address when you’re logged into Google Chrome, limit what data suspected trackers can see about your online habits, and redirect some content requests through privacy servers instead of sending them directly to websites. It’s shouldn’t be anywhere near as effective as using a VPN, but IP Protection could be a very welcome feature for privacy enthusiasts indeed.

The IP Protection feature is so far only available on the early Canary preview version of Google Chrome. When it will be launched on the regular version of the browser is not yet clear.

There seems to be a fresh requirement to run Microsoft’s free new Outlook app for Windows 10 and 11. According to MSPowerUser, you need to have Microsoft’s Edge browser installed and running in order to access your emails in Outlook. The new requirement was discovered by users on the online forum Reddit, where they posted images of the error message saying that the new version of Outlook requires you to have Edge installed.

The crux of the matter seems to be that Outlook uses Microsoft Edge Webview 2 for certain web functions. Most people will have Edge installed as part of the default Windows setup, but you may need to reinstall it if you’ve chosen to delete Edge previously.

In addition to the requirement to have Microsoft’s own browser installed, Outlook has also gained some new AI features. You will soon be able to use the chatbot Copilot to book meetings directly from email threads in Outlook. Copilot will be able to create invitations with a suitable name for the meeting, an agenda, a summary of the email thread on which the meeting is based, and a list of participants.

The “Schedule with Copilot” feature will be launched as part of Microsoft’s Preview program in March, with the real public launch will be in May. However, you will need to be a Microsoft 365 subscriber to use the new AI feature.

After almost nine years of development, Helldivers 2 is finally here. Before this week’s launch of the game, we got to visit the developers Arrowhead Game Studios office in Stockholm, Sweden to get a first look at Helldivers 2 and talk to the developers.

Now you might be wondering what Helldivers 2 is? As the developers themselves put it, it’s a chaotic action game set in a somewhat dystopian future, inspired by works like Starship Troopers, taking on the role of one of the titular Helldivers. Your task is to spread Super-Earth’s own version of democracy to planets around the galaxy, which you do by killing lots of evil aliens and robots.

The new perspective helps to increase the chaotic nature of the battles in the game. Arrowhead’s games have been known to “accidentally” shoot your fellow players. In previous titles it was pretty easy to see what happened, but now you’ll have a harder time knowing if it was the enemies that killed you, or if you happened to run in front of your mate’s gun muzzle.

The chaos of the game’s battles is really fun to try and navigate through, and the support you can call in from orbiting battleships adds to that. You can order artillery fire on a bunch of enemies, you just have to be careful not to get too close to the fire yourself. This can result in some pretty hilarious accidents. We were told by the developers how one player tried to call in artillery, but was accidentally shot in the arm and dropped the smoke grenade that marked the firing in the middle of the rest of the players. You should be prepared to experience similar accidents yourself (or be guilty of them).

The battleships in space are also your home base, where you can change the look of your helldiver, upgrade and unlock new weapons, and plan your battles in the galaxy. The game’s map of the galaxy is divided into different sectors, all players around the world will contribute to the war against the aliens and robots, the progress of the battles will be shown on the map.

Arrowhead has its own game manager who can, among other things, set goals and issue orders to the gathered players. In a given week, the goal may be to take over a planet or sector; if the players manage to cooperate and do so, new weapons are unlocked.

The game master should also be able to control other narrative parts of the game. Maybe there is a shortage of ammunition in the fleet; the players will then start the missions with fewer shots in the weapons. Or maybe there is a big sandstorm right where you should land for the next mission. In our short time with the game so far, however, we haven’t seen too much of those features.

Last week, Google launched its new AI, or rather its new big language model, dubbed Gemini. The Gemini 1.0 model is available in three versions: Gemini Nano is supposed to be best suited for tasks on a specific device, Gemini Pro is supposed to be the best option for a wider range of tasks, and Gemini Ultra is Google’s largest language model that will handle the most complex tasks you can give it.

Something that Google was keen to highlight at the launch of Gemini Ultra was that the language model outperformed the latest version of OpenAI’s GPT-4 in 30 of the 32 most commonly used tests to measure the capabilities of language models. The tests cover everything from reading comprehension and various math questions to writing code for Python and image analysis. In some of the tests, the difference between the two AI models was only a few tenths of a percentage point, while in others it was up to ten percentage points.

Perhaps Gemini Ultra’s most impressive achievement, however, is that it is the first language model to beat human experts in massive multitask language understanding (MMLU) tests, where Gemini Ultra and experts were faced with problem-solving tasks in 57 different fields, ranging from math and physics to medicine, law, and ethics. Gemini Ultra managed to achieve a score of 90.0 percent, while the human expert it was compared to “only” scored 89.8 percent.

The launch of Gemini will be gradual. Last week, Gemini Pro became available to the public, as Google’s chatbot Bard started using a modified version of the language model, and Gemini Nano is built into a number of different functions on Google’s Pixel 8 Pro smartphone. Gemini Ultra isn’t ready for the public yet. Google says it’s still undergoing security testing and is only being shared with a handful of developers and partners, as well as experts in AI liability and security. However, the idea is to make Gemini Ultra available to the public via Bard Advanced when it launches early next year.

Microsoft has now countered Google’s claims that Gemini Ultra can beat GPT-4 by having GPT-4 run the same tests again, but this time with slightly modified prompts or inputs. Microsoft researchers published research in November on something they called Medprompt, a mix of different strategies for feeding prompts into the language model to get better results. You may have noticed how the answers you get out of ChatGPT or the images you get out of Bing’s image creator are slightly different when you change the wording a bit. That concept, but much more advanced, is the idea behind Medprompt.

By using Medprompt, Microsoft managed to make GPT-4 perform better than Gemini Ultra on a number of the 30 tests Google previously highlighted, including the MMLU test, where GPT-4 with Medprompt inputs managed to get a score of 90.10 per cent.
AI-generated review summaries arrive on Amazon, Microsoft, Newegg

One task that AI can handle quite well is summarizing data, so Amazon and Microsoft are putting AI to work. Today, mobile users will begin seeing AI-generated summaries of Amazon product reviews, and Microsoft is also beginning to add AI-generated review summaries to the Microsoft Store app within Windows.

If you’re buying a product on Amazon, you’re familiar with the collection of reviews and ratings that appears well down the product’s page. Today, you’ll also see a short paragraph that uses AI to sum up what those customers think.

AI has become a controversial tool, as artists complain that placing AI art next to their own original works devalues the medium. As a business tool, however, it’s received a warmer reception. Microsoft has placed Bing Chat’s AI within Microsoft Edge, and is rolling it out to Windows via Windows Copilot as well. Bing Chat can perform a number of different tasks, but one that Microsoft has highlighted is its ability to summarize a lengthy PDF document or a web page.

Both Amazon and Microsoft are using that rather innocuous AI feature to help consumers determine whether an app or product is right for them. Amazon’s summary paragraph won’t be seen by everyone; it’s only available to “a subset of mobile shoppers in the U.S.,” Amazon said. The paragraph “highlights the product features and customer sentiment frequently mentioned across written reviews,” Amazon said.

Some of this sounds rather familiar, however. Today, Amazon often pulls out specific terms that appear frequently in review summaries. Amazon will continue to do this, the company said.

Newegg also added AI-generated review summaries last week, dubbing them Review Bytes and Summary AI, available on the company’s desktop version of its website.

“After analyzing all reviews, the AI extracts key terms and phrases to generate concise synopses, called Review Bytes,” Newegg said. “The Review Bytes highlight product owners’ opinions of their likes and dislikes of each product, helping shoppers understand key aspects without having to read reviews. By clicking on each Review Byte, customers can access the full reviews from which the information originated. Additionally, a comprehensive paragraph summary, called SummaryAI, provides further insights into multiple customers’ opinions with sentences to elaborate on key points.”

Meanwhile, Microsoft is adopting a similar approach.

In recent weeks, Windows 11 Insider preview testers have had access to a helpful new feature in the Microsoft Store app: generative AI-based summaries of the latest user reviews of individual apps. Now, that feature appears to be rolling out to the stable, public version of Windows 11, along with an AI hub in the Microsoft Store.

Twitter user Phantomocean3, an account that has spotted several new unannounced features and upgrades in Windows builds in the past, discovered that the Microsoft Store’s AI summaries are now becoming available to the public. MSPowerUser first reported about the discovery.

AI generated review summaries in the Microsoft Store are also beginning to roll out to stable. https://t.co/9TFoLkO2pM pic.twitter.com/ylpOfvefoD
— PhantomOcean3 💙💛 (@PhantomOfEarth) August 12, 2023

Judging by the example above, the new Microsoft Store review summaries seem to be somewhat positive in their approach. The generative AI seems to specifically highlight features that users have liked about the app. It isn’t clear whether Microsoft’s new AI will also be able to categorize apps according to particular criticisms they have received from users.

Microsoft has been working hard at integrating AI into Windows 11 in recent months, leveraging its deep partnership with ChatGPT creator OpenAI. Not only has the AI Bing Chat been worked into the operating system, but Microsoft also unveiled a forthcoming AI-powered Windows Copilot tool, and upgrades for Office that could be AI’s killer app.

Opera GX has long marketed itself as the browser for gamers. You can set how much memory, processing power, and network connectivity it can use, and it’s rife with extra features devoted to maximizing your play-time experience.

Now, the company behind the browser has now released an interesting new feature: After your death, the browser will clean up your browsing history and replace it with an embellished version of your Internet travels.

We just released a feature that automatically replaces your search history with a nicer one after you die pic.twitter.com/PTBIauw2xE
— Opera GX (@operagxofficial) July 27, 2023

The fake My History feature is activated if you leave Opera GX unused for 14 consecutive days. It then assumes you are either dead, or using a new browser, which the company jokingly says is the same in their eyes. The browser then deletes your history and replaces it with a fake version. For example, your survivors can see how you volunteered, and you don’t have to worry about your friends ever finding out that you had to Google guides to find all the collectibles in that game you were bragging about.

Microsoft’s ChatGPT-powered Bing AI chatbot generated lots of hype over the last few months, but only worked in Microsoft’s own Edge browser — until now.

Windows Latest reports that Bing Chat just rolled out support for Google’s Chrome browser, but with some restrictions on the chatbot’s functionality. Your chat prompts can only be 2,000 characters long in Chrome, and conversations with the chatbot are limited to five messages before the session resets.

In Microsoft’s Edge browser, prompts can be up to 4,000 characters long, and you can exchange 30 messages with Bing before the conversation is reset. As part of this update, the Edge version of Bing Chat has also been given a dark mode, another feature you can’t use on Chrome yet.

The US military has organized the Hack-A-Sat 4 competition to take place during the annual Defcon hacker convention in August. The goal of the contestants is to take over a satellite in orbit around the Earth.

Eight hacker teams from the US, Australia, Italy, Poland and Germany emerged from the April qualifiers, where more than 380 teams registered. If all goes according to plan, the hackers will compete in Las Vegas during Defcon, reports Newsweek. The participants are so-called “white-hat” hackers who engage in ethical hacking, attacking systems on behalf of their owners to identify various security flaws.

The competition is organized by the US Air Force Research Laboratory. On previous occasions, the target has been a satellite that has remained down here on Earth, but this year the contestants will target an orbiting satellite.

The satellite that the hackers are targeting is called Moonlighter, and is designed to be vulnerable to hacker attacks. The satellite is about the size of a toaster and has several security features. For example, it is not equipped with its own engines. Controllers will also be able to reboot the satellite’s system and kick out any intruders if necessary.
